Plasma-sheath effects on the Debye screening problem

چکیده
Abstract The classical Debye-Hückel screening effect of the electrostatic field generated by isolated charged particles immersed in a plasma is reviewed. The validity of the underlying mathematical model, and particularly of the weak-field approximation, are analyzed. It is shown that the presence of the plasma sheath around test particles and the resulting effect of charge screening are essential for the description of plasmas which are strongly coupled.

The photoionization of excited hydrogen atom in plasmas
a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t The photoionization processes of excited hydrogen atoms in plasma environments are investigated using the method of complex coordinate rotation. The standard Debye–Hückel model and modified Debye– Hückel model are adopted to describe the plasma screening effects. The photoionization cross sections of plasma-embedded excited hydrogen atoms varied with differ...
متن کاملAbsence of Debye sheaths due to secondary electron emission.
A bounded plasma where the hot electrons impacting the walls produce more than one secondary on average is studied via particle-in-cell simulation. It is found that no classical Debye sheath or space-charge-limited sheath exists. Ions are not drawn to the walls and electrons are not repelled. Hence the unconfined plasma electrons travel unobstructed to the walls, causing extreme particle and en...
متن کاملEffects of Screening on Quark-Antiquark Cross Sections in Quark-Gluon Plasma
Lowest-order cross sections for qq̄ production and annihilation can be approximately corrected for higher-order QCD effects by using a corrective Kfactor. For energies where quark masses cannot be ignored, the K-factor is dominated by the wave function distortion arising from the initialor finalstate interaction between the quark and the antiquark. We evaluate this Kfactor for qq̄ production and ...
متن کاملTime-varying impedance of the sheath on a probe in an RF plasma
Langmuir probes used in radiofrequency (rf) discharges usually include compensation elements that minimize the effect of high frequency oscillations in plasma potential. The design of these elements requires knowledge of the capacitance of the sheath on the probe tip, a quantity which varies nonlinearly during the rf cycle. Sheath capacitance has been studied previously for capacitively coupled...
متن کاملEffect of electron inertial delay on Debye sheath formation
Present contribution deals with the role of weak but finite electron inertia on the sheath formation condition. As reported earlier this becomes effective when the ions’ drift velocity exceeds the phase velocity of the acoustic wave fluctuations. Such situation has natural existence near the sheath edge. Keeping this in mind we have revisited the problem of usual Bohm sheath condition. Analytic...
